While responding to the call of soul does bring much greater meaning and fulfillment to one’s life, there is also a communal benefit that takes place when we live out our soul calling. The unique passions and expressions of genius that each of us carry are meant to be offered in service to the world. By undertaking the adventure of becoming more fully ourselves, we are enabled to share these inner treasures in ways that foster greater well-being for the world around us.

The truth is…
All of us in the first few decades of life construct a way of being in the world that makes sense for us. A common blueprint is to head off to school, make some friends, perhaps find a partner and/or create a family, figure out how to pay the bills, and dream about retirement. We build lives that make sense for us and develop habits and routines that help sustain the life we’ve constructed.
It all works for a while, often for quite a while. But somewhere around midlife, rumblings begin to emerge from deep within. A nagging feeling of emptiness arises. A sense that something’s amiss intrudes into consciousness. A longing for something else, something more awakens us at 3 in the morning. Such realities tip us off that the soul has begun an inner insurrection. The only life you can call your own has begun to make itself known. If ignored, these symptoms persist and grow stronger, demanding that we answer the call of our own soul. For it is only by allowing this inner insurrection to unfold that we can we live the life we were always meant to live.

A soul-centered process for personal transformation
Many people respond to this inner insurrection by trying to make changes in their outer world. They believe that by changing their job, starting or ending a relationship, or taking a vacation, they can regain their old mojo. But such attempts can provide, at best, only a temporary respite from the growing awareness that the answer isn’t to be found around us but within us. A process of internal transformation has begun that requires learning the language and customs of soul. The goal isn’t to try and “figure out” how to fix one’s life, but to allow these deeper life forces of soul to emerge.
Embrace the alchemy of inner insurrection
Beginning in the first years of life, we are trained in how to successfully interact with our outer worlds. We are taught the rules, customs, and skills needed to please our parents and teachers, and later, our bosses. While knowing how to navigate the outer realities of life is an essential aspect of becoming an adult, such skills don’t prepare us to respond when the inner insurrection unfolds. For that reason, many people become confused, frustrated, and stuck because they lack the knowledge and experience needed to successfully navigate the passage to a more fulfilling life.

Your grand adventure awaits
Each of us has been endowed with gifts, passions, and a calling to serve the world in a profoundly unique way. And the truest and grandest adventure we can experience in our lifetime is to live in deep alignment with these gifts, passions, and calling. This adventure will last a lifetime but it begins with a choice to not settle for a life that is too small, too safe, and not truly yours to live. It begins with a decision to plunge in to the hidden depths of soul and to discover and claim the treasure that has waited patiently to be found.
What is real transformation?
So many people live with a nagging sense that the life they are living is not the one they were meant to live. Feelings of boredom agitation, or grief serve as constant reminders that a change needs to be made. But what kind of change is needed? Unfortunately, often simplistic answers are given that merely treat the symptoms of the discontent and not the source. Superficial means of doing “self help” fail to adequately address the dynamics at work. Strategies of coping are offered when a process of true transformation is needed.
A true transformative process guides us into our own depths, helps us to come into a truer alignment with our soul-longing, and supports the development of a “delivery system” that aligns with that longing. The end result is a life that is rooted in one’s deepest and truest self. Living from this place of soul grounding generates a life of greater meaning, satisfaction, joy, and impact.

I co-created Seminary of the Wild which has evolved into the Center for Wild Spirituality, where I serve as a soul guide. I also am an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church USA, an International Coaching Federation credentialed life coach, an Animas Valley Institute certified nature-based human development guide, a certified spiritual director, retreat leader, and an anti-racism trainer.
